Something in the Water

a buoy on the lake width=

If you have been reading any of my blogs over this past summer, then you know that my husband and I have been swimming just about everyday since the beginning of July.

We have only missed a handful of days due to the weather - bad weather because we even swim in the rain.

We have been building our endurance up and now swim quite a distance from when we first started.

Mother Nature has treated us to loons and fish swimming right along with us.

And the warm weather has kept the water temps in the 70’s, as of yesterday it was back up to 78 degrees.

Quite often we are the only ones at the lake swimming - no one else is around at the beach, at any of the docks, or on the lake in boats either.

Well, two days ago, we were swimming our regular route from buoy to buoy.

Towards the boat launching buoy, I let out a gasp - the top of my left foot had struck something hard while kicking.

The feet came up really fast as my arms swam as fast as they could towards the shore.

My husband was laughing - he was so sure I had hit a fish with my foot.

Now, I know just how fast and nimble those fish are in their environment, so I was quite doubtful about that.

Besides, I have never felt a fish feel so hard before - it just wasn’t possible.

But it was just brushed off.

Well, fast forward to today’s swim, at just about the same location.

My husband lets out an explitive and sets out at record swim speeds towards the shore.

Meanwhile, I am left behind to follow with my much slower stokes, but surely just as fierce as his in my hurry to get away too.

Something had obviously upset him - and I was being left behind to the sharks, so to speak.

He reaches shallow water and tells me that one foot hit something hard, then his other foot hit it too.

I figured he was just teasing me, but no, he was quite adamant that something was there.

That was it for swimming today - those twenty foot dark depths were looking way too menacing to be in them.

The next sunny day we have, we will head out earlier than our late afternoon time so we can have more light.

He is determined to check out those depths with his snorkel, mask, and fins so he can make a quick escape.

Me, I will just stick to the shallows until he lets me know what is down there.

But I will give him my waterproof camera so he can show me what he finds.
