The Silence of Snow
I knew as soon as I awoke that we had received the predicted snowfall overnight.
I didn’t have to go to the window. I didn’t have to turn on the TV or the radio.
It was all in the sound - or should I say the silence.
We live in the country, so it is always very quiet here - especially during the night.
I have yet to figure out why the snow makes it so much more quiet - perhaps it is the insulating it does.
It doesn’t have this effect if there are only a couple of inches - it has to be alot - like the 8 inches that fell while we slept.
It is most peaceful - almost like being in another world.
After enjoying the silence for a bit more, we roused ourselves to begin a day of moving it all around.
Unlike the last storm, this one was fluffy and light and we were able to accomplish it in good time.

That’s a beautiful photo!

I’ve always noticed that about the silence of the snow. I think you’re right, it blankets everything and creates effective sound-proofing.

January 18th, 2009 at 7:51 amIt has been so long since I have experienced a snow like that, but you are right, there is something wonderful about the quiet of it. When I was little and enjoyed a good snow, I remember just clumping around in my Wellies, suddenly standing still and the only sound one would hear was one’s own breathing. It was lovely.
Thanks for helping me remember a positive thing about snow,

January 18th, 2009 at 5:12 pmHi Ellie - There is nothing like it - almost magical!
January 18th, 2009 at 5:13 pmHi A - If only it worked as insulation instead of freezing along the eaves and leaking inside. Oh well, comes with the territory!
