Red Bellied Woodpecker
We had a new visitor to our feeder today - a Red Bellied Woodpecker.
It was the first time I had seen one like him, and when I checked my field guide, it stated that their normal habitat range was quite a bit further south than we are.
His body has the markings of most of the other woodpeckers that visit us, but his head is most beautiful.
The red on his head extends from his beak to the back of his nape.
Both sides of his head are white - the red is like a thick stripe on the back only.
Quite unique and most bright, beautiful markings.
He seems to enjoy the suet as much as the other woodpeckers do - so I must make sure to keep an extra on hand. They are bigger than my regular visitors and will go through it much quicker.
My computer station is set in a bay window area, and a couple of years ago I moved the feeders to the backyard. They are about 15 feet away from the windows, and it is quite a treat to watch them as I work.
Since I have not had an opportunity to photograph him yet, I borrowed this beautiful image from wikipedia.

Sounds like a darn nice setting for a workstation! I envy you.
A very interesting and eclectic blog, this.
